If you've answered "yes" to one or more of these questions you should check out the Unicorn Theatre of Head of St. Margaret's Bay, Nova Scotia. It's a wonderful place where children Grade 2 and up can take part in many theatrical activities, and where young people of all ages (and their parents) can enjoy a program of excellent live theatre created especially for them.
How We Got StartedThe Unicorn Theatre grew out of a drama camp held at the Shore Club in Hubbards on July 22 and 23, 1995. The directors of that camp (The Lion King) were so impressed with the talent shown by the campers that they decided to found a year-round children's theatre.
The theatre's first production, Annie, was performed at Shatford Memorial School, Hubbards in March, 1996. In the summer of 1996, the theatre moved into Hubbards Square where it remained until September, 2001 when the Board of Directors decided to make the move to the Bay Community Centre, Station Road, Head of St. Margaret's Bay.
What the Unicorn Theatre Offers
The Unicorn Theatre has a full program of activities for boys and girls Grade 2 and up throughout the school year. We present two major productions a year (casting by audition) in the Fall and in the Spring. (See Previous Productions for the plays we have done in the past.)
In October each year we hold our Halloween Dinner Theatre for Kids, Spooks.
In addition to giving young people a chance to perform, the Unicorn Theatre offers them the opportunity to learn more about theatre and other performing arts through our Saturday Morning Club and Voice Lessons.
During the summer, Unicorn Theatre has a range of Summer Drama Camps for children Grade Primary and up. The camps are usually on held on weekends for half a day, a whole day or Friday-Sunday. Week-long drama camps and special camps and programs may also be available.
What It Costs -- in $$$ and Volunteer Hours
The Unicorn Theatre's Board of Directors makes every effort to keeps costs down so that no child is excluded because his or her parents cannot afford to pay. In order to do this, the Board needs parents to volunteer to assist in putting on the productions.
When a child is cast in a play, he or she pays a registration fee which is currently $45. On the first night of rehearsals, and later into the rehearsal period, there will be parents meetings at which parents will be asked to sign up for the various jobs that need to be done to ensure a good production. We need at least one volunteer from every family involved in the play.
Where We Are Located
We are at the Bay Community Centre, 11 Station Road, Head of St. Margaret's Bay. To find us take the 103 and get off at exit 5. Coming from Halifax direction, turn left on to Hammonds Plains Road; from Hubbards direction, turn right. Continue to the lights opposite the new Superstore. Turn right. This is St. Margaret's Bay Road. Continue down St. Margaret's Bay Road, past Rylan Jack's Restaurant, for about 5 minutes to Head of St. Margaret's Bay. You will see Billy Joe's Automotive on your left, and in about another 10 seconds you will see Station Road on your right. Turn right into Station Road and continue to last driveway on the right before the railway line numbers 11 and 15 Station Road.
