About the show

“Oliver!” debuted in London’s West End in 1960 and transferred to Broadway in 1963. An instant hit, the show was nominated for 10 Tony Awards and won 3, including Best Music and Lyrics. The 1968 film version received 11 Academy Award nominations and won 5, including Best Score.

“Oliver!” is based on Charles Dickens’ novel of 19th century London that tells the story of a young orphan, Oliver Twist, who is expelled from the workhouse because he asks for more gruel and runs away to seek his fortune. Wandering the streets of London alone, Oliver is befriended by The Artful Dodger, who introduces him to Fagin and his gang of young pickpockets. After many thrilling, and sometimes scary, adventures, Oliver finds what he most longs for in life...a family of his own.

“Oliver!” brings to the stage some of Dickens’ most memorable characters, including Fagin, a petty criminal with his band of young boys he has trained as pickpockets; The Artful Dodger, Fagin’s street-smart second-in-command, who takes Oliver under his wing; Nancy, who works in the Tavern and who tries to help Oliver; Bill Sykes, Nancy’s boyfriend, who is a thief and a bully; and young Oliver himself - an innocent in a cruel world.

The show, with a cast of about 25 actors, has a fast-moving plot and lots of great songs, including “Consider Yourself”, “Food, Glorious Food”, “You’ve Got To Pick a Pocket or Two”, and the poignant “Where is Love?”.
